106. Clasp
Its convex central section is covered with rich openwork decoration in gilded silver, forming leaves and flowers. Pearls and gemstones — turquoises, almandines, etc. — are set among the curving leaves, while a gemstone also shines at the centre of each convex “flower” form. In the central section, gemstones and pearls are arranged in two rows on enamelled leaf ornament, drawing attention to the faceted rock crystal set in a high mount at the top of the jewel. The gilded reverse is engraved with a tulip motif.
The boglár is generally a button-shaped jewel that flourished in the sixteenth century, when it was typically used to adorn Hungarian ceremonial dress. Its size varied: smaller examples were sewn onto garments, while larger ones were worn suspended from a ribbon or chain.
