with an old town

Artist: Johann Andreas Bechdolff; Bautzen, 1734 - Ellwangen, 1807
Origin date: around 1770
Origin place: Ellwangen
Material: copper
Technique: painted enamel, gilded
Inventory No.: 55.181.1

A rounded rectangular copper body coated in white enamel, with a narrow gilt-metal mount. Landscape painting extends across the outer and inner surfaces of the lid and the sides, depicting castles and towers with red roofs, set in a landscape rendered with green, turquoise-blue, and purplish hatching. The scenes are framed on either side by slender trees, while the sky is enlivened by regular patches of pale blue and purple cloud. A smaller, independent landscape vignette appears on the underside. The box is closely comparable to known works by Johann Andreas Bechdolf.
